The Semperoper

26 December, 2010

One of the gifts Bine gave me for Christmas was a guided tour of the Semper Opera House.

The opera house was originally built in 1841 by architect Gottfried Semper. A fire destroyed it in 1869... but with the help of Semper's son it was rebuilt in 1878, completed using his father's original designs.

In 1945 the building was destroyed again - this time by Allied bombing and the subsequent fire storms. Exactly 40 years later, on February 13, 1985 the opera was rebuilt almost the same as it was before the war.

I have been fascinated by this little bit of history for a while. (Pretty much since Bine and I became friends). So the opportunity to go inside and SEE was just an incredible gift for me.
